When you start a JH Cross Country season with a bunch of 7th graders, you can expect a lot of ups and downs to the season because you have fresh new blood be introduced to a sport that usually is foreign to most JH kids. They see the local 5ks and watch their parents run, but cross country is different. These kids learn that with hard work and a commitment to figuring this sport out, they can do something that a mere three months ago they didn’t even imagine was possible. This is why I love this sport and this team. Today at the MAC meet, these six 7th graders and Izzy Zahn (who is an 8th grader) explored what it meant to be a cross country run against some of the best competition in the state.
The Junior Lady Cavs would finish the season placing 7th at the MAC meet against stiff competition. The Cavaliettes were once again led by Kate Hemmelgarn’s performance that had her break 14 minutes with a time of 13:54. She would be followed closely behind by Izzy Zahn who ran a 14:13. Next to cross the line was my favorite Coldwater Cross Country runner Eve Lisi (for those who don’t know, this is my daughter) in a season’s best 14:42. Behind Eve would be her “running twin” Ella Kahlig who ran a 15:10. Rounding out the top 7 for the team were Faith Pohlman at 16:29, Dana Zahn at 19:12, and Nora Wehrkamp at 21:26. The Lady Cavs would battle all year, but we hope they take this experience, come back out next year, and improve on this year’s times by challenging themselves.
Good job and an excellent season Lady Cavs!!!
